Project: Professional Facilitation Services
Client: Canadian Pharmacists Association

The Challenge
Against the backdrop of the high profile debate about the future of health care and primary care reform, the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) was planning a consensus workshop on its Blueprint for Action for the Pharmacy profession. The goal of the workshop was to engage the profession in defining its preferred future and forging a practical plan for collective action. CPhA engaged Ingenium Communications to provide the professional facilitation services necessary to ensure a successful, actionable outcome to the session. The challenge was to demonstrate CPhA's "leadership without ownership" model by developing a realistic plan forward, while effectively positioning the Blueprint for Action to gain validation and buy-in among the audience and key stakeholders.

The Solution
Building on our extensive track record in providing value-added, bilingual facilitation, and bringing innovative perspective to change management issues, Ingenium applied the following approach to this project:

  • A highly consultative process working collaboratively with the client to build on their ongoing efforts to effectively position the pharmacy profession for future success.
  • Develop a workshop design rooted in best practices in strategic planning using techniques and material that are authentic to and respected by the association community. Design components included a pre-reading package and highly focused consensus-generating exercises deployed in plenary, breakout and individual formats.
  • Provide professional, results-based bilingual facilitation utilizing innovative techniques that enabled participants to establish clear, measurable results.
  • Develop and deliver a follow-up/evaluation mechanism to track the performance of the workshop and capture lessons learned/action steps.
The Results
The design and facilitation of the CPhA's Consensus Workshop on the Blueprint for Action allowed the association to gain a broad level of high quality input from all sectors of the profession. Common themes and initiatives were extracted during the session and combined with the overall workshop findings. This provided the CPhA with the ability to move towards the creation of a consensus-based, actionable, realistic plan for the future of pharmacists in Canada. The success of such a complex and issue-driven workshop helped to solidify the association's leadership status within the profession. Both the client and workshop participants expressed a high level of satisfaction with both the workshop design and the results obtained.
